SoftChalk is excited to announce that that we are one of 75 early signatories for a new Student Privacy Pledge that provides parents, teachers and students with important protections against misuse of their data. This pledge was led by the Future of Privacy Forum (FPF) and The Software & Information Industry Association (SIIA). Last week, President Obama challenged other companies to follow their lead. The Pledge requires school service providers to:

  • Not sell student information
  • Not behaviorally target advertising
  • Use data for authorized education purposes only
  • Not change privacy policies without notice and choice
  • Enforce strict limits on data retention
  • Support parental access to, and correction of errors in, their children’s information
  • Provide comprehensive security standards
  • Be transparent about collection and use of data.

SoftChalk pledges to meet all of the standards stated in the Student Privacy Pledge, and is proud to be among an elite group of organizations who have become early adopters of this pledge.

This pledge comes at an ideal time since the issue of cybersecurity has made numerous headlines in the past few months causing consumers to question the security of their information. Hopefully these new plans will more effectively protect American consumers from cyber threats, further the conversation of cybersecurity and emphasize the need for greater student privacy policies.
