Geometry Chapter 9

9.1 Perimeter Pages 516 - 518

The basic property of any geometric figure is the distance around the figure, or the perimeter.

A polygon is a geometric figure with three or more sides. The perimeter of a polygon is the distance around the figure, or the sum of the lengths of its sides. Perimeter represents distance so it has a linear unit attached, such as feet, meters, centimeters, miles, and so on.

Find the perimeter of the following polygon.

geopolygon.png

P = 3.1 + 3.1 + 5.0 + 5.0 + 2.4 (Write your whole number as a decimal and line up decimal points when adding.)

P = 18.6 in.

Perimeter of a rectange is equal to two times the sum of the length and width. P = 2(L + W) or P = 2L + 2W

Find the perimeter of a rectangle that is 5.25 yd by 3 yd. Draw a picture to help you find the perimeter.

P = 2(5.25) + 2(3)

P = 10.5 + 6

P = 10.5 + 6.0 (line up decimal points when adding)

P = 16.5 yd

Perimeter of a square is equal to 4 times the length of one side of the square. P = 4s

Find the perimeter of a square with sides of length 7.5 in.

P = 4(7.5)

P = 30 in.
