7.1      Mean, Median, and Mode

 

Mean (Average) (Page 418) – the most common kind of center point of a set of numbers.  To find the mean (average) of a set of numbers, add the numbers and then divide by the number of items of data.

Find the average of the following numbers: 12.5, 20, 31 and 19.3

 

Median (Page 421) – is the middle number in a set of data.  In order to find the middle number, the data must be listed in order from smallest to largest.  If there is an odd number of data items, then the median is the middle number.  If there is an even number of items, the median is the number that is the average of the two middle numbers.

Mode (Page 422) – is the number or numbers that occur the most often in a set of data.  If each number occurs the same number of times, there is no mode.

Gas mileage. (Page 419, Example 3)

The 2008 Honda Fit gets 330 miles of highway driving on 11 gallons of gasoline.  What is the average number of miles per gallon?  Miles per gallon means that you will be dividing the miles by gallons:  330 divided by 11 to find the average number of miles per gallon.

 Grading. (Page 420, Example 5)

 

To get a B in math, Geraldo must score an average of 80 on the tests. On the first four tests, his scores were 79, 88, 64, and 78. What is the lowest score that Geraldo can get on the last test and still get a B?

 

Step 1: Find the total of the 5 scores needed by multiplying: 80 x 5 = 400

Step 2: Find the total of the scores on the first four tests: 79 + 88 + 64 + 78 = 309

Step 3: Subtract 400 - 309 to find what Geraldo needs to get on the last test 400 - 309 = 91
